What Happens on the Day? ~
The Street is
closed and many people attend to enjoy an event which is as near to an
eighteenth century fair as we can make it. Traditionally, to create an authentic
eighteenth century festive atmosphere, home made bunting is hung across and up
and down the street from hooks which are already installed just under the
thatch. Residents and stall holders are asked to dress in eighteenth century
costume and visitors are welcome to join in.
The main street of Milton Abbas will be closed to traffic between about 10.00am
to 6.00pm on the day of the fair, except for emergency vehicles. All cars are
removed for the day and the cottage front greens provide the perfect setting for
individual stalls, services, entertainment and craft demonstrations.
Disabled visitors should be aware that the main village street is steep –
particularly at the top – and it is recommended that you approach the village
from the Milborne St Andrew direction as the walk to the entry gate is flatter
at this end. We do provide courtesy minibuses for those with difficulty walking
to and from the Fair (it is about a 10 minute walk from the car parks) but these
are not equipped to take visitors confined to their chair.
Dogs are very welcome
if kept on a lead. Please give consideration to other visitors and always clean
up dog mess – there are plenty of dustbins provided for disposal purposes.
